There have been a lot of positive developments in the way technology has evolved. With that being said, there are some negative implications to certain innovations which can be seen as more devastating than others. As we continue to build on our technological advancements and revolutionize society through them, it is important for us to take time out from our daily lives and consider the long-term effects of these changes so they do not lead to unintended consequences or cause irreversible damage.

The “matte screen protector” is a type of screen protector that reduces the amount of glare and reflections on your phone’s display. It also protects your phone from scratches, smudges, dirt, oil, and other debris.

Short Answer: Matte vs. Glossy

From printed images, you presumably already know the difference between matt and shiny or glossy: You may select between matt and glossy paper here as well, each with its own set of benefits and drawbacks in terms of quality and application. When purchasing a laptop or computer display, the situation is similar:

  • A glossy display is standard on most current laptops. This is mostly due to the best possible display quality: glossy screens make material look more contrasted and detailed.
  • Matt displays are less prevalent, yet they provide significant benefits: A matt display is easy to see, especially if you operate on your computer in bright conditions or even outside. Glossy variants, on the other hand, reflect so much light that they are difficult to use.
  • Matt surfaces have another benefit when it comes to cleaning: although fingerprints or dust are instantly evident on glossy screens, you only need to clean a matt display once in a while.

Matte or glossy laptop/notebook screen: which is better?

That is, in fact, a foolish question. Professional displays are matte, anti-reflective monitors have been required at VDU workstations for decades, and trade groups now mandate that the various anti-reflective coating grades be labeled.

The effects of monitor reflections have been studied extensively; in the long term, monitor reflections produce weariness, stress, and headaches. Also, when you sit at an angle to gaze beyond a mirror, your back hurts.

Mobile devices, such as notbooks, are often used under artificial light or even outdoors. Matrix screens are also much better for this: Reflections from the sun or a light on a glossy display might be so distracting that it’s impossible to make the necessary modifications while editing photographs or films, for example.

What Makes Glossy Screens So Special?

Glossy notebook screens go by a variety of names depending on the laptop maker. The technology is known as “Crystal Shine Technology” by Asus, “TruBrite” by Toshbia, and “TruLife” by Dell. Glossy laptop screens have the benefit of having richer and more vibrant colors. The brightness has also been increased. Glossy laptop screens have the drawback of being reflective. The polished, flat surface reflects the light. However, the manufacturers already have anti-reflection coating processes in place, which are somewhat effective.

So, is a gleaming screen a negative thing?

Let me put it this way: avoiding reflections on glossy displays is incredibly tough.

You can set up a workstation such that nothing reflects in the glossy display if you can really create and set up your work environment 100 percent freely, position yourself correctly in relation to windows, and situate the light sources ideally.

But, let’s face it, very few individuals are in this fortunate position. When it comes to picking a job, most people have to make concessions, and it’s rare that nothing will show up.

“However, when the monitor is turned on, it does not reflect.”

The last thing we, the editing team, saw at a picture studio was an Apple glossy monitor that was turned off and mirrored the whole business behind us. “When the monitor is on, you can’t see it anymore,” the store clerk said when I inquired whether the mirrored one bothered him at all. Our eyes are a complex mechanism. Unfortunately, concealing this knowledge is linked to work, which is where fatigue, headaches, and tensions occur.

What if you need to deal with dark images? When different colors are reflected in the display, how should you assess the colors?


Why are there any glossy displays at all, then?

For one reason, glossy displays are less expensive to manufacture. Anti-reflection coating, particularly excellent anti-reflection coating, is expensive. When selling essentially identical displays in matt or glossy finishes, the mat is more costly.

If the price of a matte and glossy display is the same, you may assume that the matte monitor has inferior technology. Despite the fact that the monitor is anti-reflective, the display is still unusable.

With Glossy Monitor, you get “more” monitor for the same price.


Furthermore, the anti-reflection coating has a side effect: although light is only reflected according to the principle “angle of incidence equals angle of reflection” on a glossy display, incoming light is scattered in all directions on a matt surface. This implies that a matte display will never be as black as a glossy display, and it will always have a small grey shimmer (poorly anti-reflective monitors have a stronger anti-reflective effect than good anti-reflective ones).

Black seems darker and blacker on a glossy display than on a medium anti-reflective panel.

This is true not just for black, but for all colors, since the reflected light blends in. As a consequence, colors look brighter on a glossy display than they do on a monitor with a medium anti-reflective coating.

Of course, that’s difficult. It’s a lovely thing to have brilliant color reproduction. You may also mute the colors in picture editing if you don’t want it. The statement “better than on a somewhat anti-reflective display” is included, on the other hand. There isn’t just one anti-reflection coating (though we wish there was), but several, and the better anti-reflection coatings are more expensive.

When comparing displays in the same price range, you normally compare glossy monitors with the next most costly monitors, notably moderately anti-reflective monitors. The colors are also more vibrant on shiny surfaces.

Display ideas for reflective notebooks

If you currently have a reflective laptop display, you may reduce the impact of reflection by following these steps:

  • Set up the display so that it faces the sun (front and back is always bad)
  • Dress in a dark color.
  • Increase the brightness of the display to its highest setting.

Is it difficult to choose between a matte and a glossy screen?

To be honest, it’s not a tough choice if you’re certain that you’ll be able to position the monitor correctly throughout its lifespan so that nothing brilliant behind you is reflected in it. If nothing reflects not only while sitting in a perfect angle in front of the monitor, but also diagonally (if you sit in front of the monitor with your coworkers), from below (for comfortable hanging), and from above (for those who look over your shoulder), you should consider getting a Glossy Monitor.

In all other circumstances, we highly suggest you to choose the matte screen, even if it is somewhat more costly than an equal monitor – are a few dollars saved so essential to you that you are willing to suffer from weariness, headaches, and tensions?

We would have wanted to demonstrate the difference with comparative photographs of a mat and a glossy display, but we don’t know anybody who works with a glossy monitor in the office or at home, and all laptops in our environment are anti-glare. You are free to do anything you want with that knowledge.

Matte vs. glossy screen/monitor comparison

As a reference, we have two comparable photographs created by a coworker in the past. One of the photographs is protected by acrylic, which has a glossy surface (akin to a photograph behind glass), while the other is protected by a matt UV-protective foil.


He took both images at the same time, from the same perspective, in the same location, and with the same camera on a tripod, in the same light. The change is enormous, but have a look for yourself:

The window and the camera’s shadow are clearly visible in the glossy image. When you view these photographs side by side, it’s hard to believe that the light circumstances are the same in the matte picture. You’re welcome to test it for yourself (although not every monitor antireflection coating is as good as the antireflection coating of this UV film).

When taking the image, there was an intriguing effect: the camera’s autofocus had trouble focusing when capturing the glossy picture. It was often focused on the reflected glass rather than the topic. Our eyes unconsciously concentrate on the mirror, which is precisely how they feel. Our brain is able to focus on the issue after that, but it’s taxing.

The anti-reflective coating on the display and the maximum brightness are two aspects that determine how readily readable a laptop display is. Because the brighter you can make the screen, the easier it will be to read on the go. However, you should exercise care while using this feature since a high brightness drains the battery quickly. In any case, a matt display allows for improved reading in low light.
